Maybe you’ll create factories stretching to the horizon, or a tourist hotspot – it’s entirely up to you. At first you’ll rely on raw materials to run your economy (farms, mines and ranches providing goods for export), but you’ll soon develop more profitable industries. Meanwhile, totalitarianism lets you treat your Tropicans as statistics, but you’ll need to divert a lot of money into a strong army to quell any uprisings that may occur.Īt its core, Tropico 5 is a city-builder, and a fantastic one at that. Democracy will keep your people happy, but you might find it hard to meet export targets when your factory workers only work eight hours a day. The best aspect of the Caribbean city-builder series Tropico has always been that it lets you play how you want to play, and the fifth instalment is no different. Don’t they know that the money for those things is far better sent to my Swiss bank account? They want to hold elections to vote me out, now? They should try telling that to my (very well paid) army. My people are never entirely happy, demanding better homes, medical care, or even better entertainment. It creates some basic risk-reward decisions, as getting cozy with one gives you the most favorable trading offers… but could also get you swatted down by the other power. It’s hard being El Presidente. The early Colonial Era gives way to the World Wars, where both Axis and Allies are furiously buying up supplies and vying for your affections. The march of time also escalates the challenges you face. You start in the early 20th century and work your way up to the modern era, though the art doesn't convey the changing eras very well. First, it now unfolds across a series of eras, each with their own associated buildings (unlocked via a simple and almost meaningless research tree) and world events. Tropico 5 largely sticks to that formula with a couple key changes. You slap down a few plantations, start exporting bananas and coffee to the rest of the world, and then get to work expanding your shantytown empire - all while taking in the lush sights and sound of a slightly debauched tropical paradise. That's not necessarily a bad thing: it's generally let you get on with the fun of building without tearing your hair out over finicky optimization games like the (also excellent) Anno series.
